Counselling and Psychotherapy in Tarporley, Cheshire
What is therapy?
'Therapy' is an umbrella term used to describe talking therapies such as counselling and psychotherapy. Therapy sessions provide a safe, confidential place to talk to a trained professional about your feelings and concerns.
You may wish to talk about difficult events in your life, or your relationships, and any associated emotions. You may be struggling with unhelpful thoughts or behaviours that adversely impact one or more areas of your life. Whatever the issue, therapists can help you find new perspectives and coping strategies.
What is counselling or psychotherapy?
The British Association of Counselling & Psychotherapy ('BACP') defines both counselling and psychotherapy in the same terms:
"A specialised way of listening, responding and building relationships based on therapeutic theory and expertise that is used help clients or enhance their wellbeing." (BACP Ethical Framework for the Counselling Professions, 2018)
There is much debate about the difference between counsellors and psychotherapists. Some people use the terms interchangeably. Historically, counsellors tended to work within a shorter time-frame than psychotherapists, but with the advent of “brief therapy", and longer training programmes for counsellors, this distinction has become blurred. (BACP C3 Information Sheet, 2017)
My personal approach
To help you explore your concerns, I strive always to be empathic, listen without judgment, and to be authentic and sensitive.
In order to make therapy as effective as possible for you, I am trained in more than one method of counselling and psychotherapy; I am also trained to work collaboratively with you, to blend and tailor those approaches in accordance with your unique needs and preferences:
In addition to offering person-centred therapy with its deep listening, responding and explorative expertise, I can also offer a more structured approach informed by training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy ('CBT'), Compassion Focussed Therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy ('ACT').
Should you wish to consider your earlier life, or your past and present styles of relating to others, I may draw on my training in other relevant theories (Attachment, Psychodynamic and Systemic). Back to Home page...
